What Makes a Wine Into a Port?

A port is a fortified wine. It originated in Porto, Portugal, and it remains one of the most beloved styles in the world for good reason. Understanding how port is made helps you appreciate every sip, whether you are new to fortified wines or a longtime fan.

How Port Is Made

Port is made by adding a neutral grape spirit, or brandy, during fermentation, which stops the fermentation early. This leaves some natural grape sugars in the wine, making it sweeter and raising its alcohol content to 18 to 22 percent ABV.

Port can also be made from a dry finished wine by adding brandy and sugar to achieve the same results. Either way, it is always best to age a port in a barrel for some time to create oak character on the nose and palate.

The Styles of Port

There are several styles of port, and each one offers something different in the glass.

Ruby, Tawny, and Vintage

Ruby port is deep red, fruity, and typically aged for a short time in barrels. It is the most approachable style and a great starting point.

Tawny port is aged longer in oak barrels, giving it a nutty, caramel, and dried fruit flavor. This wine is aged for 10 to 40 years.

Vintage port is made from exceptional harvests and bottled after a short time in barrel. It can be aged for decades in the bottle, and it is considered the highest quality of port.
